Thursday, April 13, 2023 (Toledo, Ohio) – The National Museum of the Great Lakes is looking to engage more people in their mission by offering multiple opportunities for individuals and groups to volunteer their time as museum ship attendants, special project supporters, and more.
“Whether you have 1 day a month, 5 days a week, or are looking for corporate volunteer opportunities within your company, there is room for individuals to join The National Museum of the Great Lakes’ Volunteer Crew anytime throughout the year,” says Rebecca Gray, who’s role at the museum has been redefined to put a stronger emphasis on coordinating and managing volunteer engagement. “Our goal is connecting the community to Great Lakes history and, with this in mind, we make every effort to help volunteers find projects that are important to our mission, personally fulfilling, and fun!”
Over the past few years the museum has been building their volunteer ship attendant program (which provides ship maintenance support and help with group guided tours), and has started offering opportunities for large group volunteer efforts. “From packing Boo on the Boat trick-or-treat bags, to helping paint the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship—our volunteers are truly valued and the lifeblood of our organization,” continues Ms. Gray.
This year the organization is strengthening their volunteer engagement strategy by incorporating more flexible volunteer options. To support this effort, the organization is developing a monthly “Volunteers 1st Day'' offering volunteer opportunities on the first of every month. In addition, they are beginning a monthly “Crew Connection” email that individuals and corporations can subscribe to in order to receive ongoing information about upcoming volunteer opportunities.
