Marine Trades Institute Secures Enbridge Fueling Futures Grant to Enhance Hands-On Training Opportunities for Students
Marine Technology Institute is pleased to announce it has received a $10,000 Fueling Futures grant from Enbridge. This significant funding will support the acquisition of essential equipment, directly enhancing the educational experience for students training for careers as marine carpenters, technicians, and more.
A key training component for students at Marine Trades institute is the emphasis on practical skills such as launching, retrieving, and docking boats. These real-world skills are crucial for preparing students for successful careers in the marine industry.
The Enbridge Fuelling Futures grant, combined with a USDA Rural Development Grant and MTI’s own funds, enabled the purchase of a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD truck. This new vehicle is vital for safely transporting boats and other equipment necessary for student training. Marine Trades Institute utilized a competitive bidding process involving local auto dealers in the Eastern Upper Peninsula, with O'Connors of Pickford ultimately being awarded the bid.
"We appreciate the continued support from Enbridge through their Fueling Futures grant to help us acquire equipment that positively impacts students in both training programs here at MTI," said Tom Coates, Director of Development. "A newer, safe, and reliable school truck was needed to ensure our students received the full benefits of their time with us. We've had many employers tell us this part of our curriculum gives our graduates a leg up on other applicants."

This grant underscores MTI’s commitment to providing its students with the best possible resources and training, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the marine industry. “Enbridge is proud to support the rich tradition of boating in Michigan.” said Lauren Brown, Community Engagement Advisor for Enbridge. “From keeping the recreational heritage of wooden boats alive to training students for sought out careers in marine technology, Marine Trades Institute is a vital resource for the industry and community as a whole.”
